Libljuana
14/09/2008
Today the weather has changed and there is a definite Jack Frost nip in the air. At least it is not raining.
We walked across the very photographic Dragon Bridge to the castle side of the river which is packed with old world ambiance. The dragon is the symbol for Ljubljana. Jason of the Argonauts supposedly slew one in a nearby swamp. We caught the funicular up to the castle with some very excited 4 year olds who squealed with delight all the way.
The castle has recently been rebuilt so it is not as impressive as others we have seen but still looks very picturesque, especially at night when it is lit up. It is mainly used for art exhibitions and functions - it's best asset is the views from the castle walls.
There was a medieval market and festival on. Stall holders really looked the part dressed in medieval costumes. We wandered around then found a nice cafe to survey the scene. Rode the funicular back down the hill and meandered through an antique market. Then crossed the three span bridge to the "new town" and Preseren Square. We followed our guide book recommendation to a Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Cyril and Method, with a striking church interior, then on to a display of Roman stone monuments.
