20/9/2008
We are on the ferry to Korcula Island.
This morning we had our last breakfast at the "Black Cat", said goodbye to Thomas and gave him a gold kangaroo for his good will and effort.
We booked our luggage into a holding luggage kiosk near the wharf and bought our tickets for the ferry.
To fill in time we did the Split city hop on - hop off bus tour which was okay... but not as good as others we have been on. We met a couple from Perth. He was Croatian descent and was checking out his heritage and enjoying himself immensly. Afraid his poor wife wasn't - as she confided she was not a happy traveller and dieing to get home to Australia.
We boarded the catamaran and enjoyed a pleasant 3 hour trip to Korcula, stopping at Hvar Island. We thought of spending a night here but had been advised by the Croatian girl we met at the pizza restaurant it was the young peoples party island. It certainly looked that way when the cat pulled into the harbour going by the nubiles either parading or lounging around the waterfront having a drink. We didn't want to be like "Mum and Dad"turning up, so stayed on board for Korcula. We had one Aussie guy on board who was proud of the fact he drunk the bar dry of beer. (Can't get away from 'em!!)
It was very spectacular arriving at Korcula harbour at night with the old town lit up like fairyland. We arrived to the fanfair of a wedding celebration with lot of joyful exuberance and cars blasting their horns while drive around the streets with streamers trailing behind.
We found our apartment straight away as it is only a few metres from the queue. Our landlady had said she would be waiting for us and we met her husband just coming out of the front door with a placard with our name on it to meet us at the ferry - so we saved him a trip.
Anna-Maria our landlady, had upgraded our apartment to a larger one at no extra cost. Wow! are we spoilt - this is very new with 2 queens size beds, seperate kitchen and dining area and seperate bathroom with the added bonus of a lovely view over the square and waterfront.
Anna-Maria suggested a nice seafood restaurant for dinner saying it was the best in town. We took her advice andwere locky to get a table it certainly was impressive and very popular. I had grilled squid and Bob had a steak.
We bought our ingredients for breakfast from a handy small supermarket next door to our apartment. Slept like tops!
